Letter Writing

Students in Shelley Anderson-Ledwig’s classes at Tidehaven High School and Tidehaven Intermediate School have been studying the art of letter writing.  After learning the parts of the letter and the placement of those parts, students were assigned the task of writing a letter to a company of their choice.  No two students were allowed to write to the same company.  Some students chose to write to local businesses and some chose national or worldwide companies.  The bonus of the lesson was if the student received a response to their letter sent to the school, they earned 10 bonus points added to their semester exam grade.  The letters proved to be very difficult for the students to write as they were not allowed to mail it until they made a 99 or better on the assignment.  The students worked very hard at compelling persuasive letters with all the correct parts in the precise places.  While not every student received correspondence back, some students got an amazing surprise in the mail.  Over the years, Mrs. Ledwig has done this assignment many times.  Not all students will receive a response back.  Sometimes it is simply a letter earning them the 10 bonus points, but students have received some interesting items over the years such as a box of Carmex, a square of St. Augustine sod, cases of shaving cream, makeup samples, clothing, and food samples.  It is always entertaining to get mail with a prize inside.
