HOUSTON – Alyssa Garcia, a member of the Tidehaven High School band, has been selected to the ATSSB All-State band. More than 9,000 high school students from across Texas auditioned in twenty different regions for a place in their respective all-region bands. The top chairs in each region advanced to one of the five area auditions held this past weekend across the state and only 290 of these 1980 students were selected for all-state honors.  This is the highest honor a Texas high school musician can receive. The ATSSB All-State Bands will meet in rehearsals in San Antonio, Texas, February 11-14 and will present a concert beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 14, 2015, in the Lila Cockrell Theatre of the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center in downtown San Antonio. Michael Haithcock, Director of Bands at the University of Michigan, will be the clinician conductor of the All-State Symphonic Band and Dr. Eric Hammer, Director of Bands and Professor of Music Education at the University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music in Stockton, California, will be the clinician-conductor of the All-State Concert Band. The Concert Band will premiere a piece written by Randall Standridge commissioned by ATSSB. The All-State Jazz Ensemble will present their concert at 1:00 p.m. Dr. Robert Washut, Professor of Music at the University of Northern Iowa, will be the clinician-conductor of the All-State Jazz Ensemble.

Alyssa  was chosen for this honor in competitive auditions held this year across the state at region and area levels.  She plays the alto saxophone  at school under the direction of James and Daisy Edwards, who are members of the Association of Texas Small School Bands, a 1200-member group of band directors in class 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A high schools in Texas. This is her first time to perform as a member of the ATSSB All-State Band.  She is the Daughter of Pete and Renee Garcia.
