THS Students Attend 2007 Youth Summit on the Oceans
The Tidehaven High School Band under the direction of Dawn Michaelsen earned first division ratings in Concert and in Sightreading. The UIL Band Contest was held at Palacios High School on April 16. Congratulations Band!!
Several students with the THS Spanish/Science Club visited the Colegio Juvenal Rendon School in Matamoros, Tamualipas, Mexico. Sponsors for the trip were Ms. Diana Gonzales and Tyler Odom.
Mrs. Shelly Anderson's BCIS classes prepared a PowerPoint presentation over some aspect of history that occurred in Matagorda County prior to 1956 and submitted their entries in a competition sponsored by the Friends of the Governor's Mansion. Junior students L.Ledwig and T. Havel won in the category Best Use of Images. Tidehaven High School also received a donation check in the amount of $500 as part of the competition. They were invited to meet with Governor Rick Perry and traveled to Austin on February 27th for the interview.
The Tiger Pride Band Brass Quartet of A. Adkins, G. Huffman, B. Palmer, and J. Martinez received a first division medal and qualifed to compete at State Solo & Ensemble Competition to be held in May at Texas State University in San Marcos. Congratuations also goes out to M. McGee, A. Gurecky, G. Huffman, B. Palmer, T. Parks, and R. Sturgis for earning a first division medal for their solo.
Last year a a bottle with a message in it was found off Matagorda Beach. Tidehaven High School students R. Sanchez and D. Mujica recently traveled to Puerto Rico to meet with middle school science teacher Javier Gonzalez, whose students conducted the message-in-a-bottle experiment. The Tidehaven High School Spanish/Science Club is currently working on an exhibit for the LRC Learning Center in Matagorda.
Tidehaven students R. Sanchez and D. Mujica traveled to both the U.S.Virgin Islands and British Islands for the 1st 2007 Youth Summit on the Oceans. They experienced long days of discussions about environmental issues and concerns across the oceans in connection to the Gulf of Mexico, made recommendations, and provided solutions to some of the issues.
