Tidehaven ISD
District Program and Facilities Advisory
Planning Committee Meeting
September 11, 2007
Summary of Meeting
The open forum was held in the Tidehaven High
School Library. There were 21 members present. Mr. Jones began the
meeting at 6:45 p.m.
Mr. Jones reviewed with the members the past
four meetings. After this review, the committee was informed, by
Mr. Jones, that representatives from the Region 4 ESC Facility
Services will be making an initial visit to the district on
September 27, 2007. The representative’s purpose will be to meet
with Mr. Jones to discuss possible use of their services in order to
provide the committee with needed information on the condition of
the existing facilities.
The representatives from the Region 4 Facility
Services will be asked to attend the next meeting of the Planning
Committee in October. In the future, they may be used to identify
and estimate the cost of repairs and/or construction. The
representatives would do extensive inspections of all the school
structures, work with staff and administration to determine
long-range goals, interview the district’s maintenance personnel,
and perform various other research to assist in the development of
their reports.
The committee members had a group discussion
concerning any issues they felt needed to be brought forward. The
primary discussion focused on the age and condition of the oldest
structures in the district, including the main building at Markham,
Blessing, and the Intermediate. Included in this discussion was the
need for more space, due to several factors, including the need to
meet the requirements for the new 4 x 4 rule for high school
students along with the increasing use of technology. Committee
members voiced their concern that with the expected growth in
Matagorda County, Tidehaven ISD would also expect an increase in
enrollment, lending to the need for additional facilities.
The committee members were then asked to list
some facts that they know. The safety issues involved with the
older structures and the fact that Tidehaven ISD is now a Chapter 41
school were discussed. Under the topic of information we need to
know, the committee questioned the rate of possible growth in
Matagorda County, the need for professional services, such as those
from Region 4, to help determine the importance and rank of needed
repairs and/or construction, and the possible costs involved in any
decision the committee may reach in the future.
In closing, the committee decided that it is
still important to move slowly towards any conclusion and to give
the necessary time to any professionals or advisors that the
committee may use in the coming months. In an effort to involve
more members of our communities, the committee members decided to
use the current mailing list to make contact with members through
phone calls. The members were also encouraged to invite others to
attend the meetings.
The members decided to meet October 16, 2007 at
6:45 p.m. in the High School Library. Mr. Jones adjourned the
meeting at 8:00 p.m. |
