Planning Committee Meeting

June 21, 2007 

Summary of Meeting 

The open forum was held in the Tidehaven High School Cafeteria.  There were 18 members and 1 guest present.  Mr. Jones began the meeting at 6:45 p.m. 

Mr. Jones gave a quick review of the three previous meetings, including the construction dates of each original building on each campus and approximate dates of major additions/renovations on each campus.

Each person was given a summary of the perceived strengths and areas of concerns that resulted from the members visit to each at the May meeting of the committee.  Mr. Jones had everyone review the list and ask any questions they had. 

The meeting then proceeded to discussing the districts financial information, including Tidehaven's taxable value from 1997 to 2007, appraised values by category from 2004 to 2007, the top ten taxpayers in the district, present tax rates of surrounding school districts, Tidehaven ISD’s fund balance from 1997 to 2007, and a historical look at revenues, expenditures and enrollment.  The meeting then moved to the topic of Chapter 41 and the possibility that Tidehaven will achieve that status with the coming school year. Mr. Jones presented information on options available to districts once they become a Chapter 41 school. 

Committee members expressed a desire to have a facilities study done, the main concern being the continual expense of renovating structures within the district versus possible new construction. Mr. Jones suggested that this might be possible, pending board approval.  Mr. Jones will discuss this issue at the next scheduled board meeting, July 16. Committee members chose September 11, 2007 for the next meeting, which will take place in the Tidehaven High School cafeteria at 6:45 p.m.  The meeting adjourned at approximately 9:00 p.m.
