Tidehaven ISD
District Program and Facilities Advisory
Planning Committee Meeting
May 13, 2008
Summary
of Meeting
Mr. Jones began the open forum at 7:00 p.m. There
were 16 members present. Following the welcome and a very brief review
of the previous meetings, Mr. Jones began the meeting, concentrating on
the results of the survey mailed to each committee member in April.
Committee members were each mailed a list of
building/renovation options, developed by the input from the April
meeting. Mr. Jones presented a survey result sheet showing how each
option ranked by vote. Each Committee member was asked to rank the
choices from 1-8, with one being their first choice and 8 being their
last choice. The option with the most support was E.) Build a new 9th
grade-12th grade campus and renovate the current High School
campus into a new Junior High campus and then build one (combined) PK-5th
grade campus. The option receiving the second most votes was B.) Build
a new 6th grade-12th grade campus and one
(combined) PK-5th grade campus. Option A.) Build a new PK-12th
campus, was third.
Several concerns arose from the open discussion,
including the concern over where a new campus(es) would be located.
Another concern involved the need of a 6th grade-12th
grade campus to keep some separation between the lower and higher
grades. These two concerns would need further attention once a decision
was made by the board as to what option the District might pursue. One
member asked about the effect a higher appraised value of property
currently owned by a person over the age of 65 would be. Mr. Jones
contacted Vince Maloney of the Appraisal District and was informed that
any person over the age of 65 has a “frozen” dollar amount of property
taxes that are due each year, regardless of appraised values, the
“frozen” dollar amount will never change, thus there will be no effect
on the property taxes of any person over the age of 65. The discussion
of whether to pursue building one elementary campus or two, separate,
elementary campuses generated much discussion.
After this open discussion of the survey and the
concerns committee members had, the committee decided to narrow the
choices to two, to be presented to the Tidehaven ISD Board of Trustees
at their regular June 16th Board meeting. The committee
chose option E., as mentioned above, as the first choice and option F.)
Build a new 9th grade-12th grade campus, renovate
the current High School campus into a new Junior High campus and then
build 2 (separate) PK-5th grade campuses.
Mr. Scott Cheek, Mr. Robert Dannels and Mr. Ralph
Petersen will represent the committee at the June 16th Board
meeting. Included in their presentation will be information on the past
activities and studies of the committee, the present status of the
committee and the future needs of the committee, such as attending and
presenting information to parent/teacher organizations and holding open
forum discussions with other members of the community.
The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m. No future
meeting(s) were planned.
